The fight of an orang-utan against a bulldozer who kills his forest in Borneo
International Animal Rescue has released a video about an orangutan fighting a bulldozer destroying the forest on the island of Borneo, Indonesia. The association saved the animal and was able to secure it.
The population of orangutans in Borneo has halved since 1999, a phenomenon largely due to deforestation led savagely for the manufacture of palm oil. Nearly 150,000 of these monkeys have disappeared in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. According to a study published last February, at this rate, 45,000 additional orangutans will be gone in 35 years.
The Indonesian government, which promised to protect the species, said the tree cutting was illegal after major fires in 2015. But according to a Greenpeace survey, the destruction of the forest for commercial purposes is continuing.
The International Animal Rescue team works in West Kalimantan to rescue private orangutans from their natural environment. Monkeys endangered by human activity are relocated to protected areas. If they can no longer live in a natural environment, they are welcomed at the center of the association.
"The Man of the Forest", orangutan in Malay, is one of Asia's greatest apes alongside the Sumatran orangutan. Illegal hunting is also a major factor in their decline. There are now only a thousand in the Kalimantan Forest.
