Amphitheater in Durrës, Albania

The Amphitheater was built in the biginning of the 2nd century AD. It was compared with the most famous Amphitheaters antiquity, the ellipitcal shape with the biggest axis is more than 120 m. the capacity is estimaded approximately from 15000 to 20000 spectatores. In the Amphitheater, slave owners amused themselves whatching gladiators fight beast fight and different artistic shows. This construction represents the economic power of Durrës as one of the mos important cities of the adriatic region. Games in ancient Amphitheatres were stopped by the roman emperor Honor in 405 AD. After this a church (chapel) was build in the 5. century.
The Amphitheater was discovered in 1966.
