Photography: Composition
When it comes to shooting the perfect picture, several factors come into play. Exposure, diaphragm aperture or shutter speed are some of the settings that we will have to care about if we want to take a good photography. A good setup of these three settings can actually make a huge difference to the final result, but what about composition?
Hi Steem Community! Today I will talk about the importance of composing a good photography.
Photography is an art, therefore, one can express himself, or herself, in many different ways. There aren’t defined rules that state if a picture is good or not, there isn't exclusively one way to take a good photography, but there’s a few tips you can use to improve your shots.
TWO THIRDS RULE
The Two Thirds Rule consists in filling two thirds of the image with the element that we want to draw attention to. For example, in landscape photography, we will generally want either the sky or the landscape to be the main element of the picture.
Dilapidated house in inner Catalonia. We can see that the sky has no remarkable features, so we will want the viewer to focus their attention into the landscape.
If we take a picture where the sky has nice clouds, like in the one below, we will apply the two thirds rule, making the sky the main feature of the image filling two thirds of it.
Stormy clouds shot from a field.
Next, we can see an example of bad composition. The horizon is in the middle of the image, making it flat and boring even though the landscape isn’t that bad.

HIGHLIGHT THE MAIN FEATURE
There's a bunch of different ways to highlight elements in a photography. If we want a certain thing to be the focus of the image we will center it, so that the main attraction of the picture is the first thing that the viewer will see.
Centering the poppy will help to bring attention to it. In this picture, the blurred background also helps to highlight the flower.
To conclude this post, I want to say that a great way to learn to compose good pictures is going through photos that have been taken by people with experience in photography. Soon you will notice that your composing capacity has improved and that you now know when a picture is going to look good or not, but for now, I think that these subtle tips should help you compose better images.
