Castle of Sant' Angelo

in #photography6 years ago

DSC01090.JPGIts construction began in the year 135 of our era. Originally it was created to be a mausoleum of the family of Emperor Hadrian, who started the works and was finished in 139 by Antonino Pio. Then its use was military and a great wall was added in the year 403.

Its name is due to an epiphany that Pope Gregory I had, in the year 590, when during an epidemic that plagued the Roman population, saw descend on the castle to the Archangel San Miguel sheathing his sword, which meant as the end of the epidemic. To commemorate this episode, a statue of the angel was placed, first in marble and then replaced by a bronze statue.

The castle has communication with the Vatican, through a fortified passageway known as Passetto, about 800 meters long and was used by the Pope Clement VII, to escape the siege and looting of Rome in 1527, perpetrated by the Spanish and Germanic In the movie "Angels and Demons" of 2000, a scene that takes place in this passage is appreciated. I like the feeling of seeing a place in the cinema where I've been.
