Lost in Montenegro - and we loved every second of it!

I'm a strong believer that all photographs need the story to fully appreciate the captured moment. So here's the story how we found the lonely Montenegrian tree.

27th of May, 2017 - Somewhere in Montenegro.

Me and my girlfriend have been on a European road trip little bit over a week at this point. A Few hours ago we crossed the border to Montenegro from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our destination for the night was in the North-Eastern part of the country, close to the Durmitor National Park.

I'm one of those old school travelers, who likes to rely on their own navigation system, also known as gut. So no GPS allowed (well, at least most of the time).

At some point of the serpentine mountain roads, after we crossed the border, we saw a tunnel on our left side – going away from the main road. The tunnel had no lights, pavement or signs. It was magical. A long and dark tunnel, just wide enough to drive through in our Ford Mondeo. It was like one of those video game moments from Grand Theft Auto series.

"Obviously, we drove in without knowing if the tunnel had an exit."

The tunnel must have been kilometers long and it was going uphill all the time. It was making turns. Left and Right. Sharp hairpins. We must drove a good half an hour in this totally dark tunnel before we got out.

We gained 500m in altitude and we found ourselves in an upland, surrounded by snow peaked mountains. Few farm houses in sight. Cows everywhere. Trust me, it was beautiful.

I ask my girlfriend;

J: How much water we have?
A: Enough – where should we set up the camp?

she replies with excitement​ in her tone.
