Notting Hill Carnival 2016 : It's Sound Systems

This year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the infamous Notting Hill Carnival, which is one of the largest in the world.

Aside from the traditional beautiful parade, there is a massive Sound System culture there, which I was lucky to illustrate.

A don of London’s reggae scene, Gladwin Wright boasts one of the world’s best reggae collections.

With their distinctive green speaker stack, RBS specialise in reggae, lovers rock and R&B.

Blackstar Showtime


This huge street-corner rig has a genre-spanning music policy.

Channel One


Mikey Dread and Jah T have been bringing reggae to this spot since 1979.

The Fun Bunch


They may be based on the edge of Carnival, but this team’s mix of R&B and garage always manages to set things off regardless.

Solution Sound


Sweet and melodic roots from this young crew who’ve taken on Jah Observer’s famed spot.

Disco Hustlers


As the name suggests, disco (and a healthy dollop of house) are on the menu here.

Gaz's Rockin' Blues


A swinging, bluesy and rock ’n’ roll alternative to the bass business.

Disya Generation


What they lack in spelling smarts, this crew more than make up for in new- and old-school party tunes.

Killer Watt


A heaven for ragga and reggae fans. So Solid Crew’s MC Romeo and Megaman first appeared here as teenagers.

The home for all things D&B at Carnival: expect everything from jungle to jump-up.

Aba Shanti-I


One of the country’s most respected selectors and soundsmiths pumps out dub and roots. I personally cried

People's Soundsystem


Following the passing of the legendary Daddy Vego, his son Dexter takes over this destination for all things Jamaican and reggae-related.

Mangrove/Volcano Sound


This NHC soca institution is closely tied to its Trinidadian roots.

King Tubby's


The legacy of one of Jamaican music's most respected sound scientists. Reggae and bashment.

Rampage


One of Carnival's biggest systems, pumping out hip hop, R&B, dancehall and jungle.

Nasty Love Mixing Lab


The place to head raw dancehall.

Saxon Sound


Maxi Priest, Tippa Irie and Smiley Culture on this pioneering system.
