I would like to tell you about a little project that we just started.
It’s called: Being Born A Girl

Candice, a dear friend from France and magnificent Tap Dancer will travel with me to Burkina Faso in order to research for a stage performance. The piece speaks about experiences that girls have spanning the entire world. It’s based on a text called Variations sérieuses by Emanuelle delle Piane. We are working with a translation by Kristine Greenaway. Just to give you an impression, give this little piece a read:

A weapon that doesn’t kill on impact
A weapon that infects, that rots
The body and the mind
After it, no more self-respect, no more dignity No more acceptable descendants, just bastards
The enemy’s child deep inside
A worm in the apple
An apple thrown on the garbage heap Disowned by its own
Because ruined by the enemy, forever
It
Is a weapon
Fearful
Woman killer
Without a shot
That massacres
With impunity
After it, no outcry, no justice, no compensation Or nothing but an illusion

An extraordinary war machine

Candice employs Tap Dance, Singing and Speaking as her ways of interpreting Emanuelle delle Piane’s texts. I will support her with film. Tap is a truly male dominated field. That’s why we try to conquer this language in order to communicate something so quintessentially female.

The main topics of the performance will be gang rape, genital mutilation and child marriage. These are heavy topics but they will be embedded in music and dance so we can dare to approach them.
