Flying Gurnard Picture taken at West End, Roatan, Honduras.
This strikingly odd looking creature was found by me along the beach shore at West End at about 5 feet deep. It measured just shy of 5 inches in length and maybe 1.5 inches at its widest point along its body.
The wings... THE WINGS!! Now that's something you don't see everyday. This fish uses the wing like fins on its sides to seem bigger than they actually are and they scare off prey! The bright blue and yellow tint color shown on its wings is used to make predators believe this fish is toxic and it sure does its job, this term is called "Aposematism".
It also WALKS! That's right, this fish walks on 6 little feet that are on its bottoms and only use their tail when scared and need to flee! You most commonly will see this tiny critter crawling on the sandy bottom and once it feels some sort of danger, it will display its wings and swim off.
I hope you enjoy the little facts, on these pictures and remember to hit that " ↑ " button !
