digitalis - ISO setting for macro

in #photography7 years ago

Today, i went out shooting to do this.

Rebecca R @bex-dk commented this "can you make a post in idiot terms explaining why the iso matters?"

I will try my best.

For me iso 100 is the best that my D80 can have. some DSLR can do ISO80. ISO 100 helps prevent grainy or noisy photo. but even at ISO 100 if lighting is not good it could still come out noisy. one way to help get more light is lower shutter speed. like 1/60s. but it will be hard to get a sharp image since a slight movement with make photo blur.

here's a sample of me not using ISO 100. you will noticed the photo has noise and details is less.
DSC_9444.JPG
Model NIKON D80
Shutter Speed 1/200 s
F-Number f/25
ISO ISO 320
Exposure Bias Value 0.00 eV
Metering Mode Spot
Flash Auto, Fired, Return detected
Focal Length 60 mm
Lens Model 60 mm f/2.8
White Balance Details Auto
Date/Time Original 8/22/2017 11:17:16 AM

ISO ISO 800
Exposure Bias Value 0.00 eV
Metering Mode Spot
Flash Auto, Fired, Return detected
Focal Length 60 mm
Lens Model 60 mm f/2.8
White Balance Details Auto

you will noticed that the 1st picture with ISO 320 has less noise and more details. i did not adjust any of the photos exposure and sharpness. i just resize them. so that's the actually shot from dslr.

here's iso 200. my DLSR is okay upto iso200. but for macro. i must set ISO100. otherwise i will most likely delete the shot.

this one has ISO110. i cropped and adjust the exposure and sharpness. if i do it on a photo with high iso 200 and above. in macro it will show less details.

What my setting is for macro. always iso100. then try to change the fstop and shutter speed to get a good details and exposure.
ISO 100 shots will allows us to cropped while lossing less details. making the subject larger.

what if iso100 resulted in bad exposure.

  1. you can adjust the fstop. remember it will reduce the area of focus.
  2. adjust to slower shutter speed.
  3. if both fails a good external flash is needed

Honestly all the problems and imperfections can easily be solve by having a better gear. but what i do is max out my current gear features. Check it's specs. read and understand them. then start experimenting and shoot a lot. In time it will be easy to shoot. :)

i remember 2007 when i was starting. it's hard to shoot macro. i have the same gear setup then. upto now. D80, 60mm and sb800. results are 99% bad. if i got 1 good pic. i did not even know how. and cannot reproduce such shot. I was really confused and felt tortured for hours. I did not enjoy it. so i stop shooting around 2009. and restarted 2014.
Now all became easy. a good day with willing insects. a two hour time will produce 100+ 75% good photo to share. That's how i enjoy my photography hobby and with steemit. It's more interesting. Am still learning how to do better shot. I did stopped but never gave up :)

Going back to Rebecca R. I hope i was able to explain.

Hope this tips helps.

ps. feel free to ask and will try to assist. thank you

Love how you're bringing me back to my old photography teenage years! We'd write down in a journal each and every shot's info by hand! Nowadays, all info can be subtracted right from most devices.

Thank You. I once use a dispossable film camera in 1996. Year i got married. :) am old too. but young in digital photography.

Wow, seriusly?! Great info my friend. I went from 35mm manual camera's to digital as soon as they came out, but due to health gave up one of my first loves and thast's the reason why my photography isn't as great as it should be. I left it for 20 years and use only lite devices to take my shots, but really wish to return to a professional camera (even if it will not be as often as I would like to, I am sure).

@originalworks I think digitalis deserves his work marked appropriately.

Awesome shot, I'm also learning about macro photography, thanks for sharing. Upvoted.

thanks and your welcome.

Thank you!! I can definitely see the difference in those shots. I always worried most about the fstop, if I had time. I will definitely be studying my camera manual. Considering I mostly use a heavier lens (I find I get closer looking shots with the higher mm lens despite the longer focal distance) I better get doing hand/arm exercises or use a tripod....

Likewise, Thanks. actually for start try just use one lens. for macro, i prefer prime lens. meaning it's just one focal length. like 60mm, 85mm and 105mm. thou there are some lens that seem hybrid. it can telephoto and macro. that might be more confusing for people new in macro shooting.

I don't have one that isn't zoom right now. The lens I'm finding I'm happiest with says:
TAMRON
AF 75-300 1:4-5.6 LD
TELE--MACRO(1:3.9)

Then on the other side it has infinity symbol-1.5m (4.9ft) So I assume that means 1.5m is my minimal focal distance.

Hi,I did check your lens specs. Its very different vs a prime macro lens. Since Tamron put macro. Lets try to see what it can do. I would suggest you try to shot at 75mm only. Since it says your minimum focus is 1.5m try it. Experiment also if u can do maybe 1meter. See if canefocus. Use f8 To f13. You can even use your dslr built in flash. Then after this ,you can test shoot at 300mm. Then you can see which is best. That your tamron can do. It will be hard or bad to compare it with a true macro lens result.

My other lens doesn't say anything about Macro. Probably why it doesn't work so well. ;-) If I accumulate a bunch of steem I can look for a straight higher quality macro lens, but right now it's not in my budget I don't think (I'm on disability). Although I migth see if family wants to contribute for next xmas/bday.

i read this post https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/11389018
so you will need a closeup filter. to get nearer.

Thank you!

This helped me a lot! Thanks! Upped and Steemed!

Thank You, denise :)

You are always welcome!!

Thanks. am happy that you enjoy my pictures. am just worried about @bex-dk envy attack. Hope she survive :)

Great advices, love your posts! :D

I'm glad you never gave up on insect macro's and thanks for sharing tips that you have learned. Gives me hope that all is not lost for me...I will be happy if my insect macros could look half as good as yours someday. It's certainly not easy.

Thanks. initially it seem hard. eventually it will be easy and fun.

Great pictures. I never managed to do these kinds of macros with animals so far.

You showed and broke down this in a very good way, big points for you :D, pictures AS always are great from you :D woohoo thanks for sharing :D 💖

I am in love with dragonflies and these are such a beautiful shots. UPV & RSD
I was close to take photo of one couple days ago, sadly she was gone by the time I got closer. I have only basic Canon 300 ELPH, so I had no chance. The one I saw was White Tale. When I make money on Steemit I will buy a professional camera and I will follow your instructions to use it.
