Mixing & Matching: Canon EOS lens on MFT with Kipon adapter

I've been using the Kipon EOS to MFT adapter for a few months now. I got my #Olympus EM1 MKII for a video project and I figured that being able to use my Canon lenses would be an added bonus.

I went for a walk last weekend with the Olympus and my #Canon 70-200 f/2.8 and a 1.4x extender. The lens plus the extender give it a 280mm reach on a full frame camera. On a MFT camera, this is multiplied by two. The reach is thus equivalent to 560mm at f/4.

Autofocus isn't very precise, but it works accurately around 40% of the time. Tracking the moving bird was difficult but focus-peaking was very helpful. Since I don't want to spend on a Canon 500mm f/4 or actually carry it around, this is a very usable setup.

I've also used the combination to do photographs of performers on stage. For work, I often do concerts or performers. Sometimes, if the performer is too far for me to get a nice closeup, I use the Olympus and my Canon lens.

Above is Rufus Wainwright performing in Montreal. This photo was done with a Canon 300mm f/4 lens which gave it an equivalence of 600mm on the Olympus.

Overall, it's an interesting and very useful setup to have even if it's not usable for sports or tracking moving subjects. However, if you have the little extra time to focus, you can get some wonderful results.
