My First Maneuver With The Cruise Ship Celebrity Equinox

Hello Friends!

Finally I can write again...after a long pause, today is 1st April but I am going to tell about my first maneuver with Cruise Vessel Equinox.

So My story start with me going from my home from Romania to a new contract at sea.
Always and I do mean always when I start a new contract I have this feeling or this stress because as I wrote in previous articles I had some very bad encounters with piracy at sea.
But I try to shake all those feelings off because of 2 things:

  • this is not a general cargo vessel that travels to war zones, this is a cruise vessel so extra security is provided
  • I want to achieve my goal of building my house.

Now when I got on board I had a wonderfull surprise :

  • Captain Kate was the Master of the vessel.
    I meet Captain Kate my very first contract on Celebrity , she is an amazing captain and a great teacher and role model not only for me but for many new officers that may want to join a cruise line.

Now the day is 16 of March and it is a wonderful day, because it is the day of my very first maneuver!

Basic Azipod propulsion operating principles as an example:

A vessel equipped with Azipod propulsors can be quickly accelerated to any direction.
This usually leads to unnecessary use of power to stop the motion so you have to pay attention to the current, wind speed and even depth.

So keeping in mind the basic principles stated up my maneuver was as follows:

  • I turned the azipods inwards 90 degrees
  • Waited until all lines were in and put the thrusters
  • All the time monitoring if the bow and stern were parallel.

If bow or stern were not parallel I was putting more or less power on the thrusters.
The wind was 10 knots and we had flood tide and so we used this to our advantage as we go away from the pier.
It was a smooth operation and after going more than 140 m away from the pier we went to the center console were after monitoring the right course to follow I gave the conn to the pilot like this:

  • Mr. Pilot we are on the HDG 051 (just as example), speed is 0.5 knots hand steering, azipod angle and power.

Captain Kate was and is an amazing professor and she had a lot of patience with me on my first maneuver.
Before this maneuver we discussed in length the operation and for each step I was thinking out loud and always say what I was going to do.
I must admit I was little bit nervous but I think it was normal as this was my first maneuver with the azipods.
I steered before a cruise vessel like Millennium on my previous contract and even done some tendering but I never used the azipods to undock a vessel with 4157 people on board

After this maneuver I received a small helm as token of that day. A day that I will remember always...

Acum, când am ajuns la bord, am avut o surpriză minunată:

  • Căpitanul Kate a fost comandantul navei.
    Am intalnit-o pe căpitanul Kate la primul meu contract cu Celebrity, este o uimitoare comandanta un bun profesor și un exemplu de urmat , nu numai pentru mine, ci pentru mulți ofițeri noi care ar putea dori să se alăture unei linii de croazieră.

Acum, ziua este 16 martie și este o zi minunată, pentru că este ziua primei mele manevre!

Principiile principale de funcționare a propulsiei Azipod ca exemplu:

O navă echipată cu propulsoare Azipod poate fi accelerată rapid în orice direcție.
Acest lucru duce, de obicei, la utilizarea inutilă a puterii pentru a opri mișcarea, astfel încât trebuie să acordați atenție vitezei curente, a vântului și chiar adâncimii.

Prin urmare, ținând cont de principiile de bază enunțate în manevra mea, a fost următoarea:

  • Am întors azipodii spre interior în 90 de grade
  • Așteptat până când toate liniile au intrat și au pus propulsoarele
  • Monitorizam tot timpul dacă prova și pupa erau paralele.

Dacă prova sau pupa nu erau paralele, am pus mai multă putere pe propulsoare.
Vântul a fost de 10 noduri și am avut maree de inundații și am folosit acest lucru în avantajul nostru pe măsură ce plecăm de pe cheu.
A fost o operațiune fără probleme și, după ce am parcurs mai mult de 140 m de la cheu, am mers la consola centrală după ce am urmărit cursul corect pe care l-am urmat și l-am dat conului pilotului după cum urmează:

  • Dl. Pilot suntem pe HDG 051 (exact ca exemplu), viteza este de 0,5 noduri de direcție de mână, unghi azipod și putere.

Comandanta Kate a fost și este un profesor uimitor și a avut multă răbdare cu mine la prima manevră.
Înainte de această manevră am discutat în detaliu operația și pentru fiecare pas m-am gândit cu voce tare și întotdeauna am spus ce aveam de gând să fac.
Trebuie să recunosc că eram puțin nervos, dar cred că era normal, deoarece aceasta a fost prima mea manevră cu azipodii.
Am mai carmat nave de croazieră ca Millennium pe contractul anterior și am făcut chiar niște operatii tender, dar nu am folosit azipodii pentru a manevra navă cu 4157 de persoane la bord

După această manevră, am primit un dar mic ca dovadă a acelei zile. O zi pe care o voi aminti mereu ...

What a great story And an amaizing job.
I am so jealous, i love boats and have been at the helm of many different types from long barges in the UK to small outboard motorboats in the Greek island of Paxos.
I was fortunate enough to have the use of a small pleasure cruiser here in Lanzarote. And that was nerve racking enought to dock stern in, between other expensive boats. So what you did was nothing short of amaizing. Enjoy everyday and good luck.

I had Captain Kate with me guiding me . She is a great teacher.Indeed...the hard part was to control the vessel and not let her go more foreward towards MSC Seaside (45m) on our bow.
