Happy Nightmares, tonight's Horror post - HELL NIGHT - then & now
Back in 1981, slasher films were all the rage. Low budgets & big profits. Some were a bit original, some kept you guessing 'who-done-it', they all had jump scares, & creepy music. At least in the early 80s- they tried 'a bit', or at least they did with 'Hell Night', this film had a pretty good story (with a twist), & everybody's favorite head-spinning star Linda Blair from 'The Exorcist' (personally my favorite movie of all time). There was also another big star in this film - Garth Mansion - really known as The Kimberly Crest House.
They actually did a really nice rendition of the house on the original poster (I have this poster hanging in my hallway)
This is a fraternity movie and the pledges have to go through 'Hell Night' which is a hazing ritual. They are sent into Garth Manor which is supposed to be haunted because some guy killed his family there, and legend is that one of them still lives there.
In the beginning Peter(Kevin Brophy) - the president of the fraternity takes a slow walk from the front gate telling the story of the Mansion and what happened there. You get to see the beautiful grounds and then they finally get to the mansion.
Screen Shot from film:
Of course the fraternity try to scare the newbies with boobytraps, noises, and fake apparitions. Until the horror starts and bodies start flying- I won't go into detail here. A lot of the film was actually made on these grounds and it doesn't look different at all. If you've seen the movie, you'll notice the pond in the photos. If you haven't seen it, I suggest giving it a shot if you are a 'Slasher Movie' fan.
Sweet Dreams!!
