WILDLIFE WATCH! Red Squirrels On Patrol
Red Squirrels are native to the UK, but their population is sadly in decline with just 160,000 remaining in the wild.
Whilst on my recent holiday to the Lake District we were extremely fortunate enough see a Red Squirrel scurrying around in the trees surrounding our woodland chalet.

The decline of the red squirrel has been largely attributed to the introduction of American grey squirrels in the 19th Century. The grey squirrel carries a virus, Squirrel parapoxvirus, that rarely affects them, but is fatal to the Red Squirrel.

The Red Squirrel is now a protected species across Europe and is subject to a number of different conservation efforts.
