Picture of the day #3:

Here you have an earth-boring dung beetle, most likely Geotrupes stercorarius. He is about 16 to 25 mm long and as you can see has a dark blue-violet colour. As the name describes he's feeding on animal droppings and also form pills from them to lay their eggs in them. Therefore they’re digging a hole into the ground and the pill, with one egg, is placed in there. Then the hole is closed with dung and the larvae can hatch for about one year. Afterwards the imago emerges.

Have a nice day and I see you later.
