Crocodiles!!!!!
One of the most amazing animals on the planet would have to be the crocodile. A leftover relic of from millions of years ago crocodiles have remained fairly unchanged since the time of dinosaurs.
There are a variety of different types of crocodile including salt and fresh-water and they have the most powerful bite force known to man with a whopping 3,700 pounds per square inch(psi). In contrast humans have approximately 200 psi bite force.
Saltwater crocodiles are the leaders in biteforce and with their immense power they have no issue holding onto and dragging prey wherever they see fit. The muscles in the jaw are specifically designed for biting downwards while they are comparitively weak when trying to open their mouths. so much so in fact all it takes is a few wraps of duct-tape to hold their jaw shut.
Scientists designed a computer model to test the strength of a saltwater crocodiles bite and found it could of been comparable to a T-rex. Yea, a god damn dinosaur. They also designed a computer simulation to test the strength of a Great white shark bite and found it could be up to 4000 psi however no real testing has been achieved as i imagine it would be fairly difficult to test.
Saltwater crocodiles would have to be one of my favourite animals and we actually have one as a pet on my mums rural property in beechworth as some may know from my earlier posts. ( top picture is billy our saltwater crocodile who in croc terms is fairly small.
Saltwater crocodiles can grow to enormous sizes measuring up to 6m( 20 ft) in length and weighing over a tonne.
They also live to be up to 150 years old and the size they can grow to depends upon their diet. essentially the more they feed the larger they get and i believe the largest recorded specimen was upwards of 6.4m. while larger specimens have been reported these reports have not been officially confirmed.
They have very few natural predators and once full grown their only real threat is humans. while a juvenile crocodile can be in danger of snakes. Here in australia their biggest threat would probably be the Olive python
Yea, Australia is kind of like that.
They pose no real threat to humans unless their space is invaded which like most predators they cant really be blamed for. Here in Australia there is a lot of signage in places they are known to inhabit but that doesnt stop some people like this recently documented idiot below who jumped into crocodile infested waters to impress a British traveler.
Below are some of my favourite pictures ive found of our crocodiles. amazing creatures that should always be treated with respect.
