Bald Eagles: Photography at Conowingo Dam

in #photography7 years ago

A great place to photograph or view Bald Eagles is at Conowingo Dam in the lower Susquehanna River near the town of Conowingo, Maryland.

I took these pictures with a simple hand held Nikon camera. More serious and professional photographers travel to this location to get stunning photos of Bald Eagles and other birds that gather and fish at the dam.

The dam sits about 9.9 miles (16 km) from the river mouth at the Chesapeake Bay, 5 miles (8 km) south of the Pennsylvania border and 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Baltimore.

The dam supports a 9,000-acre reservoir and the area below the dam is excellent for bird watching. At least 170 species of birds have been observed and recorded at the dam. Large groups of great blue herons and bald eagles, sometimes well over 100 of each species, have been observed at the dam. The largest numbers of eagles are present in November, and the largest numbers of herons are present in the winter months.

I took these photos in March of this year and I counted over 30 Bald Eagles in the trees or flying overhead, along with about 5 Great Blue Herons!

Oh, and bonus, you can bring your dog and walk the trails along the Susquehanna River to look for even more eagles.

Conowingo Dam is a great place for bird watchers and serious (or amateur) photographers to get awesome pictures of Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons and other birds.
