In the late 1800s, the British North Borneo Company began to establish colonies throughout North Borneo (now Sabah). The city was founded in the fishing village named Api-Api. It was expanded and renamed Jesselton, named after Sir Charles Jessel, the then Vice Chairman of the Company.
On 22 December 1967 was renamed Kota Kinabalu.

This building was formerly known as Kota Kinabalu International Sabah. Now known as Hyatt Regency Kinabalu Hotel, the first high-rise hotel building, built in KK during 70's
11 storey apartment building for police officers. Now the building deserted.
Wisma merdeka is one of most popular places for shopping on the waterfront.
The Klagan Hotel was built in 2012.

Centre Point Sabah.
Referred to as the Strawberry Building. This is one of the oldest buildings in the city center. It is 11 stories high and six stories are where offices are located. The rest of the building is unoccupied.
