I was so scared the first time I let my Buffy out, she was previously an indoor cat due to me living 7 stories up in an apartment block, but yeah once they are out, they're in their element. Completely one with the wild. haha, then they come indoors and they are like indoor cat, humanized. :)
Both humans and cats have identical regions in the brain responsible for emotion.

do you have any tips for training them to come home?
She doesn't leave the garden really, and if I just say "treat", she will come running in for one.. lol
