The Montgomery House of Prince Edward Island Canada

in #photography8 years ago

The Hugh Montgomery House was originally built in 1775. This was only a small portion of the house where it was used as a pioneer cabin. Later additions over the last 200 plus years give it the centre gable style it has today. The house held 5 generations of the Montgomery family before being sold to my family in the 1950s. By the time my family first visited Prince Edward Island the house was up for torching! Fortunately, my great grandfather was able to purchase the house for just $500! It’s scary how a piece of Canadian history was almost burned down to the ground. This is now a summer home and its amazing living in a relic of the past.

The main threat to this house today is the cliff erosion towards the back of the house. The house will probably be lifted and moved to prevent it from collapsing into the bay. The erosion has been accelerating in the recent years, and about 50 years ago there was an entire acre behind the house which is all gone!

What do you think about this house?

Pretty area, its a shame that erosion will necessitate moving the house though.

It is, we have also looked into many options including shoring up the cliff face with rocks imported from another part of Canada. But we are just moving it a little deeper inland on the same piece of land.
