Love birds are one bird of nine species of Agapornis genus species. They are small birds, ranging from 12 to 16 cm weighing 42 to 63 grams, and are social. Eight of these species are from Africa, while the species of "gray head love bird" originated from Madagascar.

Their name comes from the commonly observed behavior that a pair of love birds will sit close together and love each other. The nature of the couple of love birds is monogamous in the wild. Their average lifespan is 10 to 16 years.
