MAKMEUGANG
In Aceh, a day or two days before the month of Ramadhan (fasting month in Islamic tradition) are known as makmeugang, which are also called meugang or urou seumuesi. (slaughtering cattle days). Within these days, Acehnese people have meal made of meat; even chicken and duck are also cooked, only sie leumo (beef) and sie keube (buffalo) are considered as meat for makmeugang.
This tradition has long history in Aceh, even since the era of Darussalam Kingdom. Besides cooking meat, Acehnese people also prepare traditional snacks: timphan for those living at northern coastal area, and leumang and keutupat for those living in western and southern coastal area.
