Amanitas are not as toxic as you were led to believe as a kid... They have been used for a long time in Siberian shamanism. There's even people who say that's how the story of Santa and his flying reindeer started.

I've been told many russian soldiers in WW2 that came here died because they were poisoned. It was the poison concentration which was much, much higher than that in cooler climates in Russia.
I've heard some people used it as a drug (to see santa I guess). They took small part of it and threw it into a jug of milk. How much is needed for the effect is beyond me. :)
