Zooming in on the Moon

Update: 18-Oct-2018 - Sigma 170-500 version added

How much detail can you see in the moon with a compact Olympus 75-300 zoom lens? Here is my attempt from tonight using 190 separate images stacked in Autostakkert and with basic sharpening applied. It helped I figured out the camera wifi and got the shutter triggering remotely from my iphone.

I don't think there is much more detail possible at this focal length and pixel size (maybe somebody can prove me wrong!)

Sigma 170-500 version

Using a borrowed Sigma 170-500 Zoom adapted to the same camera here is the moon the following night. Although the moon appears the same size here, the extra focal length clearly shows improved image quality. I will definitely be looking out for this lens on the second-hand market (or the newer version which reaches 600mm). However, this lens is far less portable and too heavy to take on a hike :(

huh, i got OMD EM1mk2 too. I did not knew this is so possible with this cam. And ... ohh, i have no 300mm yet

I find the EM1mk2 pretty awesome, how do you like your cam ?

Btw I would recommend the 75-300 Oly lens as a very good walk around/travel lens. You can also see what it is capable of here :)

Very nice Terry :-)
The lens seems to have a pretty nice image quality.
I think the only way to get maybe a little bit more details would be with some kind of contrast filter in front of the lens. But I think the increase would be minimal. Maybe the details would also be less due to the longer exposure time that is required and the atmospheric disturbances.

True maybe a blue/green filter might help with resolution/contrast a little. Hmm, might have one of those :)

I think it would be interesting to see if it increases the details or decreases them due to more glass in the optical system or the slightly longer exposure times.

Some years ago I made a comparison between the 100-300 f4 sigma and a 1000 f11 achromatic refractor. The Sigma lens had much more detail even with just roughly a third of the focal length. This was caused due to the chromatic aberration of the refractor and the atmospheric disturbances that are more visible at 1000mm. Also, the optical system in the lens is way better corrected and coated than an achromatic refractor.

Check out the Sigma 170-500mm version I just added above.

The quality is very impressive. It seems to be almost better than with my 420mm APO refractor.

This is a single shot of the Moon with the Sigma 100-300mm F4.
The image was taken with my Nikon D7100 1/200 sec., ISO 100 and the Sigma lens @300mm f6.3

That's a pretty good amount of detail! Yay for figuring out camera wifi :)

Thank you. The WIFI was slightly unintuitive in the camera, as it seems to only be active when the camera is put into the WIFI setup menu...but we got there in the end :)

I really like the level of detail from the Olympus zoom lens its seems not to have many blury spots, An the moon is always a beautiful object to take a shot, great picture!
