When it warms up around here our city comes alive. Lots of people out, walking, riding and running - and that includes me. I took my dog out for a run along the river and decided to take a slightly different route from my normal one. That meant running by the Peace bridge.

I only had my phone camera on me, but the pictures turned out pretty well. Which just goes to show you, the gear doesn't matter (well it sorta does), but you can find creativity almost anywhere.

I'll keep talking about 'just shooting', as a phone camera or cheap point and shoot can still be used to get creative. Most of it is practice and looking at the world with a slightly different eye. Personally I like trying to find places that don't seem photogenic. Grocery stores, second hand shops, hardware stores etc. are all great places to shoot. I should really take my own advice and do more of it - but I'm lucky to live in a pretty place. So outdoor/landscapes make more sense for me.

For those that haven't seen our bridge - it was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava - and it was a gorgeous addition to our city. Jokingly people call it the finger trap bridge. And although some people will complain that the commission should have been given to someone from Alberta or Canada - I still think the results were worth it. It's hard to imagine the bow river without it now. Especially as right beside it are some 70s style brutalist bridges that are kinda gross...although they're also back in style (but that's a subject for more photos).

Parting words....

Just go shoot.

That bridge looks pretty awesome. He build some bridges in the Netherlands too and was famous for structural flawed bridges and underestimated prices ;)

That happened a little here too...but it works and it's lovely.

yes, the red is really nice in such a blue & white view :) The rest... it's just money, who cares!

Cool vantage point you got under the bridge, very creative!

I'm a fan of Calatrava. He is also a civil engineer. He gets his inspiration on parts of the human body.

On the other hand. Totally agree. Best camera is the one you have with you. I've been carrying my camera even to the grocery cause you never know what you might find. Bad news, when I do find awesome things to shoot, I don't have it with me, because Venezuela is quite dangerous and you can't really take a camera with you everywhere, not even a cellphone. It's so frustrating. But I try to have it on me as much as I can.

I can imagine....but only imagine. Canada is sooo safe compared to most places in the world.

That bridge is so cool! Great shots of it!

Thanks muchly. Was good light today.

These are great photos, @jfolkman. It's a great subject and angle. I used to have a lot of gear, lenses, tripods, everything. Now I just carry a camera phone and set HDR to "on" if I think it's a subject worth photographing.

Why HDR? Does it make any difference? I have never tried that one.

Funny you should ask, @rimicane - I do it because (I think) it's a larger file size and higher definition. It takes up more space on the camera, so for just normal pictures I don't use it unless I think I will print them or post them here for a contest or something.

I keep it on too. I've got lots of space....so might as well

This bridge is insane! Futuristic! I love it! Your city stepped into the future! 😆
I see there are LED lights (?) on the ground, probably interesting view at night! Is it only for pedestrians? Looks empty that's why I ask.

I waited for a bit. Usually it's not this empty. Bikes and pedestrians only.

Gorgeous shots!! Really shows that framing and composition plays a crucial role, not just the gear!

I totally agree with you! Some of my favorite photos were taken with my phone, even though I carry my main camera with me just about everywhere

So do I - but can't carry it when I'm running :)

Nice shots and the creativity is out of this world. Let just say you know how to handle your phone camera very well and just imagined you taking a shot with a canon T7 or so.
Nice bridge.

Oh I still use my SLR - but on a run that's tough to carry
