The Mekunu cyclone wreaks havoc on the Arabian Peninsula
At least one person is dead, and 40 are considered missing after the mighty cyclone of the Mekunu hit the coasts of Oman and Yemen. The victim is a 12-year-old girl from Oman who died when the wind caught her and threw her against the wall. On the island of Socotra, belonging to Yemen until the morning of Saturday morning, 40 people were considered missing. Among them are citizens, among others Yemen, India and Sudan.
Large losses were recorded in Salala, the third largest city of Oman. About 10,000 people were evacuated. Both the international airport and the port in the city were closed. The element also led to power outages. The Omani police warns citizens against approaching the Arabian Sea.
Meteorologists predict that Mekunu will be weakening from Saturday evening, but in the coming hours there will be still heavy rains, twice as high as normal at this time of the year.
