Lack of faith could be a lack of humanity
This is a point of view where the lack of belief in a god or spiritual higher power can cause destructive behavior or mental instability, although the same could be said about having sufficient belief. So, lets start with why lack of belief can cause problems. The first that comes to mind is there's no one watching your every move and there's no after life. So, we break that down, if you believed in all of that when you were young, you might have felt pretty deceived and small when you came across people who said it was childish or untrue.
Maybe you never believed that someone was watching out for you or trying to steer you. So, the glitch that could happen is if there is no higher power, I can do as I please as long as i fool the next person or persons. With that kind of thinking a lot of negative propositions can arise. When the higher power becomes you, there's less standing in your way to do negative things to the next human. If we only live once, I guess be greedy and take what you can, which sounds more like the end of the world instead of living.
If you felt deceived you became angry, and now you angry with nothing to believe in, which is quite a change in perspective. When the mind is exposed to a lot of new information it can cause instability, something like a black hole in the mind, a lot of new information cramped in a small space. Now paranoia can creep in as it has merit, as well as delusions and distrust.
This is not all black and white, I believe there is no black and white. We all living in a grey area where i guess you get darker shades and lighter. We all have morals and know there are consequences for our actions, and then there is belief which alters this. All these effects can be subtle, but planting seeds in the mind is subtle. Not having a spiritual belief could be or lead to being less humane.
Nowadays, it is more common to find a non-believer, it is understandable the arguments of religion causes conflict similar to race conflicts, which is something we do not need. Belief can lead us in the wrong path, but true spirituality should not lead to wrong doing and conflict, in which case whom or what is your higher power? Science vs belief arguments is somewhat of a circle where science argues evolution and could be also argued it is a higher power creating us in their image. And how does something come from nothing? If nothing is something.
I believe spirituality is part of humanity, and you don't need a religion to have it. Maybe, we don't want that higher power watching our every move and judging us, it might be more stressful. Having some imaginary friend that makes you feel better could make you feel small. There are lots of reasons to give it up, my concern is what else we would also be giving up?
