Regressive Viral Apocalypse

The total end of liberty on earth didn’t come exactly as expected.  

The people didn’t fight the law, but the law won: They simply didn’t fight.  Around the year of our overlord, 2015, a psychic virus came out of its dormant stage and started spreading throughout the minds of the humans. This strain was the most insidious kind that has ever been seen on earth. Unlike previous evolutions of mind parasites, which would allow their hosts to hate intensely, but convince the hosts that their hatred was morally justified; this ultimate mutation actually re-wrote the perception filter to see its own hatred as Love.  

When a human host perceives its actions as ‘loving’, there’s nothing that’s off-limits.  

With the energetic shifts around that time, the new wave of empathic humans were particularly susceptible, for they were able to feel the deepest levels of pain from around them, but lacked the wisdom to channel and transmute it. This was all the virus needed to drag them into a victim consciousness spiral, which made them see only the pain. The hosts were no longer able to truly enjoy anything in life.  Everything had to be analysed and censored in real-time until the all the joy was drained out of any activity. This caused the host’s happiness and self-esteem to plummet, which, in turn, lead them to seeking out more perceived oppressors.

Naturally, this caused them to group together with other infected humans and to adopt abhorrent ideologies and behaviours. The virus’s self-awareness was growing inside the expanding hive mind. The individual infected (what remained of them) knew something was wrong with the world, but with the virus’s influence they were never going to identify any real sources of the problem. The closest they could get was to identify groups according to arbitrary superficial traits like race, gender, orientation, temperament, etc. That they deemed the oppressors... their enemies...  

The irony is not lost on us. The initial instinct of an infected was not of evil, it was one of compassion. This very compassion without wisdom and strength was the very weakness the virus exploited to turn its hosts into the violent zombie puppets.  

Compassion can turn into bitter resentment at the drop of a balaclava.  

We suspect that a large percentage of the immune population knew that the infected were acting this way due to some sickness; but just like with a rabid dog, just because it’s sick, and you ‘feel’ for it, doesn’t mean you’re going to let it bite you. At first, the immune wanted to help the infected, to cure them. They soon realized that they, themselves were too peaceful and too logical to defend against the infected, emotionally-deranged hordes.

The infected started to band together in mobs, destroying property, chanting war cries which lacked any coherence, and violently attacking anyone who was not yet infected. It was getting a bit too dangerous for the healthy to even be around the infected. With heavy hearts, the immune lovers of liberty cried out for help to their oldest enemy: the state. With the support of the immune, the state responded swiftly, branding the infected as terrorists and putting them all in camps.

After a few days of celebration, the immune had realised the severity of what they had done.  The state now had total control over their world... anyone, along with the immune would now be put into the camps alongside the infected if one would so much as speak out of turn...   

It’s almost as if... this was the plan all along...
