The legend of a lonely mermaid

in #philippines7 years ago (edited)

My soul is full longing for the secret of the sea,
and the heart of the great ocean
sends a thrilling pulse through me.

Every Saturday night, we - me and my mom or should I our family used to have a so called "story telling". Hahaha! Well since Sunday is rest day, we don't mind the clock. We are exchanging stories about ourselves. What happened the whole week, I saw something cool, I got embarrassed when.. etc.

I remember the popular story of a mermaid in my mom's province. Whenever we're visiting our grand parent's home in Quezon province, my eye is always stuck with statue of a mermaid sitting in a huge rock. The monument is at the national highway along the Atimonan, Quezon.

When I was a kid, your "lolo" grandfather is leaving our house around 1-2 am in the morning. He will ride his fishing boat reach the "laot" (middle of the sea) to be able to catch fishes. One time, he woke up in cold air. He can't go back to sleep so he decided to prepare his equipment. After preparation he walk straight to the kitchen's window to check the wave of the sea. As he open the wooden window, he heard a woman's voice. She's humming along the waves of the sea. He's still adjusting his eyes in darkness to see things clear when a woman with big "fish-like" tail started. The human-fish's body was shiny. Maybe because of the fins around his body.

The other fishermen says that the mermaid is watching them as they throw the fishnets in the mid sea. They hear sometimes a woman's voice like it's singing. With the small amount of light from their lamp, they can see the big "fish-tail" splashing the with waves going to the side of Atimonan.

When the mermaid's sighting became popular, different stories was made.

Some people says that the mermaids is dangerous. She may brought you to their kingdom in the deepest sea and you will never come back.

They say that the numerous sightings of mermaid is a prediction that something destructive will happen.

But the story marked since then is, the mermaid fell in love with the fisherman's son. She pretend as a normal woman to follow her love. She's the most beautiful woman in the province. They love each other so much. He introduced her to his family and get easily accepted. When the man asked her to marry him, she said yes ignoring the warning inside her mind. He made his promise, "We will be together forever". They live happily as a couple until one night, she decided to tell them who she really is.

Everyone was shocked. They sent her out of the house and locked the door and windows. She ran to the sea crying, waiting for her man to seek her. She waited for his man to visit her in their meeting place - the huge rock where they started everything. The mermaid was always in there waiting..

The rumor is, the fisherman sent his son to manila.

Day and years have passed but the lonely mermaid is still waiting until one day, they all heard a angelic voice crying. The sky started to dark and strong thunder screams. The waves are arising. After the typhoon, the mermaid was lost.

People decided to build a monument of the mermaid. Since then, it became the most famous landmark when entering Quezon.

I was dumbfounded after the story. I always wanted a happy ending! Nah!!! By the way, weather the story is true or not, let's just leave it as legend.

I am actually a kid who believes in "to see is to believe", but as I grown up, my belief changed.

I believe now that other unknown creatures are living. Though their not with us; maybe hiding, we must respect "them". If they didn't want to be exposed, let them be. Universe is too big for human being. We share the earth not only with our fellow human, but with all the other creatures. Let's be creature among the other creatures.

Advice from a mermaid
Get your tail to the beach
Don't get tide down
Make waves
Catch a sea breeze
Avoid pier pressure
Always sea life's beauty
Come out of your shell
Take time to coast
Keep the beach clean
It's my home sweet home.

This story is beautiful! And naiiyak ako 💔 I'm one who loves happy endings as well but also loves tragic endings. Mermaids and their search for love. Always one of the best stories for me.

Beautiful though the ending is painful. Huhu! We felt the same. Still wondering what happened to this mermaid. Hihi. Thank you for dropping by miss @finette. <3

I also believe in the things that seem so unbelievable. The world is so wide and there are so many things that are yet not discovered. Great story by the way :)
