Recent uptick in doggie cancer in Krabi (graphic images)
There are many benefits to sterilizing your, or stray animals. The main one being that this is the only long-term method of control that is ever going to work because unsterilized animals will reproduce as often as they possibly can - it is just in their nature.
However, there is another benefit of having strays sterilized that we are only recently starting to discover here in Krabi and that is the fact that unsterilized males, who have testicular cancer - which just like in humans is a very common form of doggie cancer, is spread by mating and this just adds to more suffering to both the female they mate with, as well as their offspring. The only way to stop the cycle is to eliminate the mating as much as possible and get the already affected ones treated.

Fortunately, treating dogs with chemotherapy is far cheaper than it is on a human and for reasons I can only pretend to understand, it tends to have a much greater chance of success. In fact, I have not seen a single case (thus far) that hasn't been successful.
Unfortunately, just like in humans, this requires multiple treatments (normally around 6) and even though it is MUCH cheaper than a circuit of treatments for humans, it is the most expensive thing that we do here and it couldn't come at worse time given our current funding situation.
When a dog has testicular cancer, it is normally extremely evident because of the engorged state of their "equipment." These animals, despite being in constant pain due to the sensitivity of the unit there, still will mate any time that they can do so and since we have been only pursuing the sterilization of females in the past year, the males still manage to find females that we have not gotten to yet.
The removal of the testicles would work if it weren't for the fact that the cancer, once it is visually noticeable, has likely spread to other parts of their bodies as well and this method doesn't get the job done, therefore chemotherapy is the only solution.
Treatment costs around $25 per time and another added difficulty is that these affected males are normally significantly less friendly than other street dogs and can prove difficult to capture, even with fried chicken. Then, we have to board them as well because one treatment is not enough and we might not be able to find them, let along re-capture them, if we simply release them and go back looking for them again in the future.
We are doing as much as we can but as I mentioned many times in the past the Covid lockdown of Thailand has eliminated 90% of our funding since most of our donations came from tourists who want to help as much as they can. We do appreciate this but none of us could possibly foresee the entire world being locked down like this.
We don't want to ignore this problem and recently we got some good news that a rather large UK based business is contemplating sponsoring us. I try not to get my hopes up as we are still in the talking stages at the moment. We are keeping our fingers crossed!
I once again plead with you to help in your own community with animal welfare and animal rescue. Since we are all locked down anyway we may as well do what we can... right?
