Well, when it comes to emotions, there are two ways we can handle them.

We react, in which case the emotions control you.

We respond, in which case you control the emotions.

I actually wrote about this in depth in two of my posts (emotional intelligence pt 1 and pt 2 ) if you're curious to check them out.

Reaction is what happens when your ability to reason suffers due to your emotional volatility. Your judgement gets clouded and you stop thinking clearly, which can lead you to say or do things you'll later regret.

Response is what happens when you feel the emotion and it's affect on you, but choose to not let it override your critical thinking. Your judgement stays clear and your chances of doing or saying something you regret are far less likely.
