Pen and Paper RPGs - which games I played part 2

Today I want to write a bit about my experience with

Dungeons & Dragons

After playing The Dark eye and switching to Shadowrun (and we also tried other games like Vampire, Space Gothic and even the Dragonball game) my group and I tried another fantasy game and that was Dungeons & Dragons.
We started with edition 3.5 and I have to say that it was awesome. The setting is like I said a cool high fantasy world with everything you can imagine. It's a bit like in Lord of the Rings but with more fantasy and magic.
The rules are more simple than the rules of other games and combat is a very big part of D&D. Sure it depends on the work of your dungeon master and what story he creates but in almost all cases it's going against a big boss at the end ;-) If you have ever played for example baldurs gate or neverwinter nights then you will know what I mean.
It's fun to fight against evil creatures and as you character becomes stronger so do the enemies. The characters (again ranging from warrior over thief to warlock) are starting a bit stronger than normal people but with each level they gain they become much stronger. The level is going from 1 to 20 and epic levels from 21 to 30. The characters are getting a lot more power with each level but what I like the most is the magic which gives each character the real power. A high level Warrior is cool but with some magic items he becomes a real powerful dragon slayer who is as strong as a small army. And as a wizard you are the mighty fireball throwing artillery who can burn away many foes with one swift move of your hand.

Each character also has a set of different skills like move silently, open lock or diplomacy. In D&D 3.5 you have skill points to level up these skills depending on the intelligence rating of your character. They can be used to give the characters more live so that they can be used to more than just killing stuff ^^

I love that you can create everything that you want as a DM and it's all possible within the rules. You want your adventure take place on floating islands? Sure that's possible. The wizard of your group wants to build his own wizard tower filled with lots of traps and magic items? Sure that's also possible if he has enough money for it XD.

My character was a sneaky little halfling thief who tried to backstab his enemies or use magic scolls which he could use with the skill use magic device. With this skill it's possible to use magic items which have special conditions to use them like you have to be a half-orc or a warlock. Because of that I always had something special up my sleeves to rescue the day or to light up my pipe.

At the moment I am trying to motivate my group to test the 5th edition of D&D . From what I heard there are some nice changes.
What are your experiences with the 5th edition compared to the others?
