Pelosi Steps Down

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D, CA-12) has announced that she is stepping down as House Democratic leader, although she will still remain a regular member of Congress after 20 years. The decision comes weeks after her husband was seriously injured by an intruder in their San Francisco home in what officials suspect was a politically motivated attack, and after the midterms when Republicans regained control of the House.

In 1987, Pelosi was first elected to serve in Congress. In 2007, she became the first woman to handle the Speaker's mantle since she was appointed House Minority Leader in 2002. More candidates can be found here.

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R, CA-23) is scheduled to take office when the new Congress convenes on January 3. With seven elections still to be announced, forecasts suggest Republicans have secured the 218 seats needed for a majority. Three or four additional seats are available.
