The Nature of Listening Comprehension

Relating to the type of students that their comprehension of reading is going to be analyzed, it is crucial to know the profile of beginning level student in listening. True beginners on listening lack bottom-up processing skills because they don’t have enough linguistic categories toward material must be listened. They receive the new language as undifferent voice. Sounds that is considered similar may be classified as different, and sounds that is thought different may be classified as the same. They are not familiar with rules of word formation, inflections, or word order. Their vocabulary store is nonexistent.

If the teacher follows principles of comprehension training, students will have many chances to comprehend with a little amount of vocabulary store that is focused on clear illustration of materials. General listening selection should be short to one or two minutes in duration. Teachers monologue is effective if they are given simple utterance : basic sentences, clear pronunciation, limited vocabulary, and visual support for new words. One important use of global listening is the giving of new material, when students are skilled readers, it is good to give new material orally. The teacher may select any part of the lesson or he may write a text based on the lesson. Once he has mastered a few simple principle and routines, he can use it daily. Add new vocabulary and structures slowly, this will build students’ confidence. Global listening exercise such as short teacher monologue can be given in a large class. Students must be active with a task while listening, so teacher can be sure that he or she is using time wisely. Preparing selective listening exercise that focus on structures or sounds in contrast is fun for students, listening discrimination tasks can focus on tenses, Singular / Plural differencies, word order, or new vocabulary : there are many easy possibilities can be done by the teacher.
