SLC22W3 | Basic Pattern Tracing for Children's Clothing | Class #3
It's actually a good thing making this post on the 1st of January, 2025. Previous lessons have taught us how to make panties and overall for children in such a way that fits them and looks like wears for children. The patterning actually follows that of the basic bodice pattern but has different measurements and structures.
Though I wasn't able to participate in week 1 and week 2, I followed the lessons properly. Why I couldn't participate is because of the unavailability of a cardboard paper in my locality. I had to travel out of my locality to get it. This post houses the transformation of both wears which are the;
- Panties
- Overall
Female children aren't excluded from these measurements and styles of dressing from the measured value, size and shape sewn. From the basic sketch which we had the waistline for the waistband attachment, chest line and other important markings, we'll start our transformation by marking the middle line and then draw a straight line to the waistline which we'll classify as the chest line.
There'll be a modification for the front and back pattern and there'll be a crotch curve from the crotch line to make this possible.
- After fitting for the back and front, we'll take 7cm upwards for the back since we're dealing with overall. The 7cm would be the length from the back and a width of 3cm which a straight line would be drawn. The waistline mentioned earlier would have a measured value of 7 cm based on the measurements I'm using which would be split. We'll call this the half waistband of the overall's bib.
From the picture, we can see the structure is really an ideal structure for the jumpsuit or overall of children. Most parents wear their children this overall as it's free and easy to take off but the bad thing about this dressing is that you'll need to take off the bib of the jumpsuit to urinate and can't be easily done in public compared to a panty.
I wasn't an exemption of this jumpsuit in my childhood. A shirt or blouse would be worn inside to cover the upper part of the body. Now to the Panties.
- Before then, we work on the shoulder drop and neckline. We'll have to mark it and take the length and width of the strap. We'll then join the first line we marked to the waistline at the onset and make curves by the neckline and the the side of it, this after finding the middle point of both sides. At the crotch point, we'll take a measured length mark and then join it with the hemline. A new line is then formed.
From the back, we would take some length measurements of 6-9cm and then join it with the middle of the back side with a curve that is inner or deep.

Then we add the back parts with that of the front with an additional length of 5cm to get the exact size of the strap from the dress. We'll then divide it to where the buttons would be positioned. This gives a fitted dress pattern for the overall and makes it shapy.
For a girl's style when joining the blouse and skirt, we can have different dresses based on the measurements. To get the exact width of the girl's skirt, we need to multiply it by 3 and then get a chest dress pattern by moving to the waistline on the dress which was discussed earlier.
To get the waist length dress, the skirt should be on the waistline which is around the waist region and the hip length dress should be on the hip line between the waistline and hip.
These are the basic transformations involved in joining the overall and panties for children. In today's era, dresses like this are beginning to fade and become a memory. Talking from experience in Nigeria though.
To this course, the pictures have done justice to the transformation as it has shown the actual dress and its cuts. I want to thank @lunasilver for bringing this up so I can learn. I've not seen children's clothing before and don't know how the transformation and cutting works but this tutorials has helped me see how common it is with men's trouser but different structure.
I invite @max-pro, @artist1111 and @patjewell
