I'm afraid of using colors, so I challenged myself to do some abstract paintings just to feel free to play around with as many colors I feel/want

Which is very good and one of the best ways of learning painting.
When you play with it several times, believe me you won't be scared to make a portrait painting. You can even be applying different colors outside the original.
