Day 404 - The Pareto Demon
Day 404 - $8,733 made, 25 events held, 6 products designed, 48 twerkflows made. Spent the morning breaking free of the drag from tasks that were nagging me by attacking them head on.
Throwback to Day 39 - 0$ made, 0 events held, 0 products designed, 10 twerkflows made. Working on the business plans of some of my compatriots. Getting turned down by suppliers that I wanted to establish wholesale accounts with.
Pareto distribution has colloquially become known and referred to as the Pareto principle or "80-20 rule", sometimes called the "Matthew Principle". It has been used to explain why, in various manifestations of human production, an inordinate amount of resources end up in the hands of relatively few benefactors. Stating that, for example, 80% of the wealth of a society is held by 20% of its population. Or another example that 50% of the work in a company will be done by the square root of the number of the people in the company. So if you employ 100 people, 10 people do half the work, or even more devastatingly, if you employ 10,000 people then 100 of them do half the work of your company. Jordan Peterson has expanded on this in multiple talks and recordings.
I've begun wondering if this is even true on the individual level. My hypothesis is that I do half my work in tiny bursts throughout the day, amounting to no more than 20% of my total work time.
Even on my best (most productive) days when I am heads down for 10+ hours, I think real production happens in some small fraction of that time.
Since listening to volumes of Jordan Peterson lectures in 2017 and 2018 I become convinced that I needed to do everything in my power to put myself into the category of people who are the ones producing all the work. The top performers. One of the 10 out of 100 employees. I'm still pushing towards that, but now I have added on this new facet of wondering how I can extend in duration and frequency these bursts when I am the incarnation of my own top performer. My Pareto Demon.
I hit one of these bursts today, where after a moment of pure disgust I ceased looking for my lead domino task to tackle and just went after everything else outstanding on my list. I got to Outbox Zero, designed a new set of product instructions, applied to a ton of new vendor spots that might host my business and a swarm of other small tasks that had been procrastinated on for a week. And it felt fucking amazing. Was it a combination of caffeine, nicotine and testosterone that just hit me perfectly at 9:49am today? Maybe it was just sticking to my regular routine and being swept away in a fortunate moment of flow. I can't say what exactly it was, but I know that if I could get that Dave to show up twice as much I'd get twice as much done....and kind of have a blast while doing it.
So now I am wondering when this Top Gear Dave is going to rear his head again?
