Do grown up kids listen to their parents?

in #parenting7 years ago

By grown up, I mean the ones in their teens. I remember when I was around 15, I was rebellious. I often did what my parents warned me against. It was not that I was a bad child or wanted to disobey my parents, but I was adventurous, I wanted to know what would happen if I do so even if that means putting myself in trouble.

I was a little over 16 when my parents told me not to go roaming on a certain road near my school because she feared there were drug peddlers there, but, the curious me had the balls to visit that place even after my mother had cooked up stories and fed my little brain with things like witches and black magic. I believe, I would not have visited the place if she had never mentioned about it. The way she warned me got me curious. Though there was nothing there at that place, it could have been dangerous and teenage kids are always high on harmones and want to try what is forbidden. Tell them not to smoke because only bad kids smoke, then be sure he/she will taste the butt because they want to explore what being a bad kid is like. Instead explain to them the consequences. Tell them real stories.

I guess, my mother, instead of cooking up stories to stop me from visiting that place , should have taken me there along with her to show what goes on there or else she said
Would have been more clear about the dangers I could fall into.

Of course my generation was a little dumb compared to the present one. The dangers can be different, but the consequences may be frightening. So be a good parent. Don't make stories, because your child understands when you are doing so.
