Do animals have emotions like humans?

Honestly, both of these perspectives can simultaneously be legitimate. I engage in it myself. Some of this is because all emotional relationships involve a certain amount of projection. We are each living our own emotional experiences when we feel like we're connecting with another person or animal. We are experiencing the relationship on our own level that may or may not be matched by our partner. All relationships are parasocial in a way and that's not necessarily unhealthy as long as it's reciprocal and mutually beneficial. I do think most of our animals are diminished in their capacity to feel the same things that we are, but I completely reject the old fashioned idea that animals are by default just a simple bundle of stimuli response loops. I do think they have an internal life and we should keep the default assumption that they are more similar to us unless we have a reason to believe there's a significant difference either in quality or quantity of their experiences. We grow from the same evolutionary tree and almost everything that makes us human pre-exists us and is shared by others albeit in a different and often more primitive form.

I think the key difference between humans and most animals, and there could be animals that are exceptions to this, is our capacity to live in the future and the past. To form long-term goals and reminisce about what has come to pass. This gives us a capacity to Hope and plan and aspire, as well as dread, regret, catastrophize etc. I think that the human emotional capacities, and I base this upon what we know about our brain structures and cognitive abilities, are largely separate in the domains of connecting our feelings to what might be, and what could have been. We feel pain and pleasure beyond the senses and recent experiences to a degree that I don't think our pets usually participate in. So much so that things that haven't happened yet, might not happen, and even couldn't happen form a rich part of our current lives. Additionally how we feel now, is often a epic summation of many abstract as well as concrete things that have happened over the course of our life, especially those things that we have strove to achieve and fought to avoid.
