Karachi: The Sindh government has decided to use the mobile banking system to disburse Rs4.021 billion compensation package among the people in the province affected by the devastating monsoon rains last year.
The decision to this effect was taken by the Sindh cabinet whose meeting was held at Chief Minister House with CM Syed Murad Ali Shah in the chair.
The cabinet decided to use the mobile banking system instead of conventional banking as the victims of the floods who mostly belonged to the deprived sections of the society, would not be required to open bank accounts for the purpose.
The would-be beneficiaries of the compensation package would only be required to present their original Computerized National Identity Cards to any of the outlets of the mobile banking system present everywhere to get the promised aid money.
The Sindh cabinet decided to invite proposals from different telecommunication and mobile banking firms to dispense the aid package without any further delay.
The cabinet also granted exemption to Sindh Board of Revenue from the rules of Sindh Public Procurement Regulatory Authority so that the mobile banking services could be used.
The aid package includes Rs 100,000 for next of kin of each of the 149 people who lost their lives in the rains. Each of the 103 persons injured across the province due to the monsoon rains will get Rs 25,000.
The compensation package also includes aid for the people whose cemented and mud houses were completely or partially destroyed during the rains and also for the farmers whose livestock were killed in the tragedy.
The Sindh cabinet also requested the federal government to match its aid package so that the assistance to each of the victims of the tragedy could be doubled.
