Self Portrait in oil paint step by step

I begin with an underpainting. I use "scarlet lake" from Holbein mixed with a lot of liquin, maybe 1:2 ratio. I also use a grid to control my proportions on the canvas and to play with key visual points that will look better to the viewer.

Next I begin actually painting over my underpainting after it has dried completely, maybe about a week later just to make sure it's dry and also to give my brain time to clear so that I may look at it with fresh eyes.

It's also important to keep in mind that oil paint can look very heavy very quickly because of its materiality and also its historic content, so its best to start painting thinly with a lot of liquin again to make sure it can dry well before the next layer

For this one, I only did 3 layers ( 1 underpainting + 1 painted layer + 1 "glazing"/detail/corrections/etc) you can do more, it adds more depth or more thickness, but I've been trying to feel light lately and breezy. up to you
