Guardians at the Edges
The Walkers in the Darkness have a duty they say,
to never miss a turning but to walk the entire way,
to follow paths and byways that are little seen by day,
there behind the shadows where the sleeping children play.
The Watchers of the Heavens have a passion to know,
to probe the cosmic questions that always seem to grow,
to measure black eternity and the aether's ebb and flow,
beneath the wheeling band of stars where people cannot go.
The Listeners to the Mysteries have courage to spare,
they hear the silken whispers on the winds from otherwhere,
and keep the bloody secrets entrusted to their care,
deep within the citadels floating in the twilight air.
The Seekers in the Distance have the honor to be first,
to ride with such dexterity that lesser folk would burst,
to see the future looming and ride into its worst,
between the last horizon and the teeth of Heaven's cursed.
And all the other guardians with virtues pure and bright,
stand before the portals where the darkness meets the light,
And their honor and their courage and their passion for the right,
will help them do their duty and may even be enough tonight.
