Steemit Open Mic Week 60 entry - "Exit Music (For A Film)" - Radiohead cover
Here’s a little ditty about Romeo and Juliet.
I’ve seen Radiohead play this live (at Stone Mountain, no less), and it was as transcendent then as it is on the studio recording on the album OK Computer. Thom Yorke wrote this for the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack, that movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. It was used as the closing music for the movie, thus the name. If you know the story, and I think most of us do, then you will understand everything in these lyrics. It’s a very intimate telling of the end of Romeo and Juliet, one that starts quietly yet urgently (“Pack and get dressed before your father hears us”), and gradually builds to a heartbreaking climax of love, and anger towards those who came between it (“Now we are one in everlasting peace, we hope that you choke”), and comes back down to a nothing even quieter than the beginning, as the story ends the way we all know it does.
Shakespeare and Radiohead go together pretty well, I think.
Here are a couple of Radiohead songs that I recorded in my studio, with me playing all the instruments:
Nice rendition Paul, did you know that this song it's inspired on a Prelude by Chopin?
Enjoy
Yo brother, Paul - you put your heart and soul into this one, man! I'm feelin' it too, yo... by the looks of all your likes and comments, other folks are feelin' it too! Plus, your dog just get's me every time! I love dogs... :-)
Thanks brother! It's just a powerful song. I've considered doing a studio recording of it, but I can't think of anything I'd do differently than the original. So I just play it live.
I love your performance sir as always but I also love your partner Tawny Kitaen send my regards please..
Thank you! I'm just glad Leia didn't lick her butt in this one.
Wow, amazing performance. I really enjoyed the Leonardo DiCaprio, Romeo and Juliet movie, but somehow I don’t remember this song. The song is kind of haunting. You have a perfect voice for performing it too. Your voice has a deep, earthy, Johnny Cash feel to it. Great job!
You know, that's really funny that you mentioned Johnny Cash (and thank you, by the way), because I totally forgot to write in my post about how Thom Yorke had been listening to the Folsom Prison album when he wrote this, and was influenced by Cash. That was really surprising and interesting to me, as I've always thought of it as sounding like a futuristic Pink Floyd song.
This song was in the closing credits of the movie, but wasn't on the soundtrack album for some reason. It is on Radiohead's OK Computer album, and they do have another great song that is in Romeo + Juliet called "Talk Show Host".
It was the best closing credits song ever, It also played in an episode of Black Mirror. Love this song.
I have to say.... This was AMAZING sir!!! One of my favorite Radiohead songs. And done beautifully!!! Got my upvote, I am now following you, and will re-share so my friends can also hear your awesomeness!!!! Your voice is spot-on!!
Thank you so much! I thought I had followed you after watching your Open Mic from last week, but I guess not. I just fixed that!
Just posted my entry for this week's open mic. Just to let you know :)
YES! I've been waiting. :-)
that was really good! thanks for joining this weeks open mic! and sharing your talent with us! <3
Romeo + Julliet is one of my favorite movies, btw!
One little advice though. You get to put 5 tags on your post.. why did you just use 3? using the other extra two gives you a higher chance to be found by other steemians... ;)
i am denifinetly upvoting you btw!
Thank you! I try to be judicious about the tags I use. I want to make sure I'm using appropriate ones, and also since being away for nearly a year I'm not even sure what tags are still used or what new relevant ones there are. I've just gotten broadband internet access back after moving, so now I can really delve into Steem and get things going, as opposed to just posting once or twice a week when I can send out the internet smoke signals through my phone data.
hahaha !! i see... well.. i'm sure you'll be fine!
How to see more of you on open mic mister!
Have an awesome evening!
I also have this problem with tags. So much to the point that I just use my screen name sallyswitchblade as a tag sometimes. I'm pretty sure that is not how steemit works. I am still learning a lot about it in general.
If you get to the point where your name is a major tag on Steemit, then I think you will have arrived. :-)
I have trouble with music tags because openmic seems to be the only really solid music tag for performers. The music tag is so generic as to be nearly useless for musicians, and I'm not sure what's going on with originalmusic. Fortunately there are people working on that, with things like the new songwriting contest. There's so much potential and talent here, and I am both working on getting myself into a daily groove with Steemit and thinking about how I can help build the musician community here. I'd like more outlets for recorded music, for those of us with studios. Maybe a recording contest or something. For now I'm just posting and pondering, and watching what other Steemians are setting up to help the community.
Wow, great cover. I have just heard about open mic and I also want to make some covers. I love Radiohead :)
Well then come on and enter, @ebi16! Here's the contest for this week: https://steemit.com/openmic/@luzcypher/steemit-open-mic-week-60-record-your-performance-and-win-steem-sponsored-by-pfunk-and-luzcypher
It starts every Sunday, ends every Friday.
Yes, I will try to do that :) Thank you
Major props for doing radiohead. I personally love to cover 'Just' in my live set and attempt Paranoid Android from time to time. Also, hi doggo!
Both great songs! You should do one of them for Open Mic.
I'd need a full band.. which I don't have right now :/
Ohhh my god this is so amazing Paul Followeddd!!!! :)
Thank you so much!
