Steemit Open Mic Week 49 - "The Mountain Wind" original song
Hi Steemit this is a brand new original song for my entry in week 49 of the open mic contest. Not sure if these are the final final lyrics but close enough to sing for you all anyway.
This is a little bit of a darker song / theme than I have sang here before, perhaps a reflection of the fact that I was laid off from my job the day I started writing this.
The verse about the sea is in reference to my cousin Olen who drowned when the fishing boat captained by his oldest brother went down - he was the strongest swimmer of three brothers on the boat, so he was the one who went out on the deck to try to cut loose the life raft while the boat was going down. He was still attached to a line when the boat went under the water. His brothers cut every line in sight but he was pulled down with the boat. The mountain wind and the sea - that is where I grew up in a nutshell. Mountains rising straight out of the water. Southeast Alaska is beautiful and wild and unforgiving. Where my soul feels free, far from the city.
As always don't forget to visit and upvote the Open Mic Week 49 contest page, and remember to give some love to @luzcypher and @pfunk for hosting such an awesome contest and putting up the prize money. You guys rock!
The Mountain Wind
The Mountain Wind lyrics
Down below in the city streets
where the sky and the pavement meet
and the puddles have a rainbow sheen
from the oil and the gasoline
and its hard, hard, hard - to be free
In the dead of the night
In a forest on a mountain where the trees begin to thin -
and their withered limbs bend from the wind
When my soul and my body part
and they go their seperate ways
this is where my soul will go
to look down at the trees below
and blow, blow, blow - in the mountain wind
On a boat out in the storm
when the waves come crashing down
and the shore is a distant dream
and the waves come crashing down
and the waves come crashing down, down, down
and they swept him out, out to drown
It wasn't me, wasn't me, but by Jove it could have been, in the cold, cold, arms of the sea
It wasn't me, wasn't me, but by Jove it could have been, in the cold, cold, arms of the sea

Yeah man, freedom… - it ain’t free… But you Carl, are free as a bird! This tune just kept gnawing at me - relentless in its purpose, and profound in its beauty…. This was splendid Carl, and I LOVED it!
As usual sir you are too kind. You actually have a gift for describing a song - I love reading your take on my music. I should hire you to write liner notes for me LOL very glad you enjoyed this one. It is a fun rhythm and melody to play and sing.

I approve of your hat! Thanks Aaron!
It's pretty catchy
Thanks @johnnymugg!
really liked this performance. love your beard and the song is fantastic. your voice is wonderful as well.
Wow I love this and would definitely had stopped by your stage if you played it at a bluegrass festival.
👏👏👏👏 Excellent piece there fella! Gordon Lightfoot's Edmund Fitzgerald crossed my mind during that. 👍 Obviously, it goes without saying that was totally from the heart.
I love this @carlgnash . Your song has a timeless vibe to it. Your excellent guitar work makes it sound modern, but harkens back to a musician sitting on another porch just like yours in 1917.
Great tune and performance. Love it.
