Acquire Useful Skills with Open Source Software

OSS stands for Open Source Software. The good thing with OSS (Open Source Software) is that the source is freely available so we can modify the code. But most of the time, we, regular people won't know or need to do that. Most of the time we'll just use the OSS programs. So the second best thing to OSS is that those apps are free.

So instead of paying $$$ for an app like Photoshop or maybe paying $$ / month instead as is the trend now, why not pay zero ?

Now the question is: should I learn every OSS app there is on the planet hoping I will need that skill in the future? Of course no. But you could learn a few things that have a great chance to be useful to you in the future.

So you should know:

  • To see the difference between a free app (that might not be free after all) and an open source app
  • To download and install an Open Source App
  • To be familiar with opening files/projects and exporting files from that Open Source App
  • To remember a set of tasks you know to perform within a specific OSS App

Maybe you still do not agree with me right now but you will in the future when you'll realize the idea was not that bad.

When in school we learn many things, but how much of what we learn we really use in life? Maybe not much, but then if we don't want or like to learn what will we become?

I should have said acquire without paying anything but you have to pay with your time which should me more valuable than any money. So make great use of your time and maybe don't try to kill some time. That expression on itself is a sad thing, maybe it shouldn't have been invented at all.

I'll start a series of short tutorials on different tasks that can be accomplished with OSS. That knowledge was useful to me on many occasions and I am hoping that it will be useful to you too.

Wish Me Good Luck!
