-The biggest sporting event in former Yugoslavia were of course, the Winter Olympics which were hosted by the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sarajevo from the 8th to the 19th February.

At the Olympics, whose organization has cost 142.6 million $, participated 1,272 athletes from 49 countries to compete in six sports.

More than 4500 journalists from around the world reported from the '84 Winter Olympic Games.

An estimated 2 billion people followed the events in Sarajevo.

The Games had their own heroes - Finland's Marja-Liisa Kirvesniemi, who won three gold medals in cross-country skiing, Germany's Katarina Witt who impressed the world with her figure skating, as well as the British pair Torvill and Dean with their Bolero execution.

Yugoslavia was thrilled with Jure Franko winning the first medal at the Winter Olympics for the former state.

In addition to the fact that half of the cost was covered by the sale of rights to television coverage and that a total of 250,000 tickets were sold of which 200,000 abroad, Sarajevo had concrete economical benefits from the Games.

Along with the Olympic facilities, the event left behind 2,850 newly bulit apartments, several hotels, roads and infrastructure and at least 9500 new jobs.

During the preparation and maintenance of the Winter Olympics in 1984 Sarajevo passed through its own cultural, sports, economic and touristic Renaissance.
