Treasure Hunt in a Time Traveling Fun House

in #oldbuilding7 years ago

First, the fun house...

Adam’s newest job is the remodel of a 127 year old building. Originally it was an opera house. Over the years it’s been a cobbler’s shop, a furnature store, a general store, an appliance dealer and a trophy shop, among other things.
The building has been remodeled and redecorated so many times over the years that touring the place feels like walking through a time-traveling fun-house.

Many of the ceilings in this historic building are the original tin tiles, and most of them are in amazing condition.

Thankfully, the owners of the building want to have the ceilings restored, rather than tear them out.

The staircases are wild. This staircase ends about 4 feet from the door at the bottom. If you ran down these stairs, you would hit the floor, beause these stairs stop with the bottom ‘step’ being about 5 feet off the floor!

A door to nowhere? Or is this something like platform 9 3/4?

I don’t even know what to say about this carpet. It just makes me laugh and cry.

The third floor was apartments. The old one’s with gas lights on the walls, a shared hall bathroom and screen doors on each unit.

Now, the treasure...

In and under the plaster that has fallen from the ceiling over the decades, my son, Brendan, found these reciepts and utility bills.

Before the real demo started, Adam and Brendan salveaged a bunch of doors and windows for me! Here are a couple of them.

During demo, Brendan found these bottles and post card in a wall. The one with the label has a glass stopper in the top!

The latest great find was found while digging out around the foundation of the building.

These are just some of the bottle they brought home!

Besides all these treasures, they were able to salvage a bunch of lumber and some beautiful uper and lower cabnets, counter top and sink for the tiny house my son is planning, and a giant pile of pavers for me to play with!

Thanks for your interest and thanks for your time!

That is really cool that you save these great items. I know a lot of contractors who would just trash all them neat things of the past!

I know! We love this kind of stuff, but even if they didn’t want to keep it, they could sell it, or give it to someone who would appriciate it. We just can’t bare to bare to see what we consider history to be thrown into a dumpster!

ermergerd. I LOVE IT ALL!!! Did we just become best friends?! (I hope you have seen Step-Brothers. If not, ignore that.) Haha!

But seriously. It's all so beautiful. I'm so glad your hubby is down with bringing "trash" home. I couldn't imagine losing it.

Yup! high five

A lot of the guys on the job have been baffled by the idea of filling the truck up with old junk and trash and hauling it home when there’s a perfectly good dumpster on the job site. There were a couple old timers that grabbed a couple bottles, and one guys wife wanted one of the windows to paint. I’m grateful that when Adam and Brendan saw these things, they thought of me!

Wanna go do karate in the garage?!

Merry early Christmas to you then! I'm super impressed by your haul.

@ powellx5, I admire the fact that you see treasures. That is the kind of person I desire to be. Keep the great attitude and keep finding ways to fix things instead of throwing them away!

With the right attitude, life is one big 'ol treasure hunt!

Have you ever watched the show "Salvage Dawgs"? I'm obsessed cuz this is what they do for a living! I work at a local architectural salvage yard here in Colorado and while we don't go to the site and just get stuff donated to us, I adore #oldstuff ( ;

Wouldn’t that be a dream job? Just goin’ around and saving treasure!

I do it... but in thrift shops haha

OMGosh, I'd have loved to just go around that place! It could almost be converted into a crazy funhouse hotel. Those stairs that drop off at the end just tickle me! The adventurous kid in me could just go wild there!!

Yeah, before they started demo, my daughter and I explored the whole place. There was no electricity on the third floor and all the windows were painted black, so I totally took advantage and scared the C.R.A.P. out of her.

There were staircases that went all the way to the third floor, then we’d have to go down a hallway to another staircase to get down to the second floor. Crazy place!! I should have taken some video and posted that... oh well, next time.

🤣 evil mum! Sounds like a maze.

Oh my gosh! What a project! What an adventure!
