In Istanbul, Galata Tower

I’ve spent a few days of holiday in Istanbul, Turkey, I told you about it here:

One of my favorite places to hang on during evenings was Galata Bridge; during days, I recommend you cross the bridge and take a visit to Galata Tower.

Location

Galata tower it’s located in Karakoy neighborhood, where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus. You can reach here by car, tram T1, taxi or Uber. If you travel in group of up to 6 or 8 persons, I recommend Uber: there are excellent drivers and it’s cheap (of course you must have internet connection). I’m pretty sure you can take a boat too, but from our location we’ve preferred the tram. Near the tower there is access only by foot on narrow streets. There are souvenirs stores here and little restaurants.

History and description

The stone tower was built in 1348 by Genovese people, it’s about 67 m tall and it was the tallest building at that time.

It was destroyed by the fire for several times; that’s why, at the last restauration from 1967 the interior was made of concrete. In the Ottoman period, starting with 1717, it was a point utilized to locate the fires into the city.

There are 2 elevators and stairs. We’ve taken the elevator to go up and stairs to go down. On the stairs there is a low ceiling, so watch your head!

From the top of the tower the view is spectacular. From here the painter Pierre Prevost painted “Panorama de Constantinople” in 1818. According to the historics, in 1630 Hazarfen Ahmet Celebi flew from the tower till Uskudar with wooden wings attached to the arms.

At the last floor we’ve found a restaurant; from its windows you see the Istanbul and the Bosphorus.
Galata tower it's a landmark you must see while in Istanbul.

I've been up there, there are so strong currents outside compared to the ground level. A pewit used these air currents to practically stay still in the air, half a meter from where I was. View is spectacular indeed.

It was a very hot day so I enjoyed the currents :) The seagulls were there, I observed them from close range too.
