PhotoWalk to Marostica in the famous city of the living chessboard - Discovering Italy with alequandro!

Hello everyone and welcome to this Christmas episode of "Discovering Italy with alequandro!".
A few days ago I was in Marostica in the beautiful citadel of northern Italy located in the hills of the province of Vicenza.

Ciao a tutti e benvenuto in questo episodio natalizio di "Discovering Italy with alequandro!".
Qualche giorno fa sono stato a Marostica nella bellissima citadina del nord Italia situata tra le colline della provincia di Vicenza.

The day was rainy and with me I didn't have a camera, I had to use my old iphone 6s.

Marostica is called the city of chess because every year a game of chess is played in the main square with living figures with historical clothes, even with real horses!

La giornata era piovosa e con me non avevo la macchina fotografica, ho dovuto usare il mio vecchio iphone 6s.

Marostica è chiamata la città degli scacchi perchè ogni anno si gioca una partita di scacchi nella piazza principale con figure viventi con abiti storici, perfino con cavalli veri!

Despite the rain, but I managed to appreciate the beauty of this town.

Nonostante la pioggia, ma sono riuscito ad apprezzare la bellezza di questa cittadina.

This is where chess games are held with the lower castle behind, because yes, Marostica has two castles: one lower and one upper!

Qui è dove vengono svolte le partite di scacchi con dietro il castello inferiore, perchè si, Marostica ha due castelli: uno inferiore e uno superiore!

Going up the road to the upper castle I came to this church but there was a funeral so I didn't go to visit it.

Risalendo la strada verso il castello superiore sono giunto a questa chiesa ma c'era un funerale quindi non sono entrato a visitarla.

A few meters away, a large scenic staircase leads to another church.

ITA

Pochi metri più in là un'ampia scala scenografica conduce ad un'altra chiesa.

As I approached the staircase, on the right is the cloister of the convent of S. Antonio Abate ... I thought: wow, how many interesting things to see!

Mentre mi avvicinavo alla scala, sulla destra ecco il chiostro del convento di S. Antonio Abate...Ho pensato: caspita, quante cose interessanti da vedere!

The building was closed but at least I was able to visit the outside.

ITA

L'edificio ero chiuso però almeno ho potuto visitare l'esterno.

Then I went to the church and slowly, in the rain, I went up the stairs.

Poi mi sono diretto verso la chiesa e piano piano, sotto la pioggia, ho risalito la scala.

There was nobody inside the church, here are some shots of the interior.

Dentro la chiesa non c'era nessuno, ecco qualche scatto dell'interno.

After leaving the church I noticed an ancient wall hidden by parked cars. There was an entrance, I decided to go and see.

Uscito dalla chiesa mi sono accorto di muro antico nascosto da delle auto parcheggiate. C'era un ingresso, ho deciso di andare a vedere.

It was a commemorative area created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

Si trattava di un'area commemorativa realizzata in occasione dell'anniversario dei 100 anni dalla prima guerra mondiale.

Some didactic panels described the most relevant aspects of the war by topics:

The camps, the transport of goods and provisions, hospitals and health personnel, defensive lines, etc.

Alcuni pannelli didattici descrivevano per argomenti gli aspetti più rilevanti della guerra:

Gli accampamenti, il trasporto delle merci e dei viveri, gli ospedali e il personale sanitario, le linee difensive, ecc

Then I decided to continue the exploration and followed a sign that would lead me to the upper castle.

It is not clear from the photos, but the path was quite slippery and uphill.

Dalle foto non si capisce, ma era parecchio scivoloso e in salita il percorso.

It was raining, I didn't have the right shoes and the pavement was becoming a small stream...

Stava piovendo, non avevo le scarpe adatte e la pavimentazione stava diventando un piccolo torrente...

Reluctantly I had to postpone the exploration of the upper castle because I risked falling.

ITA

A malincuore ho dovuto rinviare l'esplorazione del castello superiore perchè rischiavo di cadere.

I descended an asphalted road leaving the long city wall behind me.

ITA

Ho ridisceso una strada asfaltata lasciando alle mie spalle la lunga cinta muraria.

A long porch protected me from the rain and the Christmas decorations had put me in a good mood.

Un lungo portico mi ha protetto dalla pioggia e gli addobbi natalizi mi avevano messo di buon umore.

Along the arcades clothes shops, pastry shops and bakeries, I was coming fam with those perfumes, but I managed to resist the temptation to stop and buy something!

Lungo i portici negozi di vestiti, pasticcerie e panifici, mi stava venendo fam con quei profumi, ma sono riuscito a resistere alla tentazione di fermarmi a comprare qualcosa!

Once I arrived in the main square, with the fog that was invading the upper castle, I decided to enter the lower one.

Una volta giunto nella piazza principale, con la nebbia che stava invadendo il castello superiore, ho deciso di entrare in quello inferiore.

An ice skating rink had been set up in front of the castle entrance, but it was morning and nobody was there.

ITA

Di fronte all'entrata del castello era stata allestita una pista per il pattinaggio su ghiaccio, ma era mattina e non c'era nessuno.

As soon as we entered there were posters with the most important events that the city will host.

ITA

Appena entrato c'erano i poster con le manifestazioni più importanti che la città ospiterà.

A few meters further, here we are at the internal courtyard with the central well.

ITA

Qualche metro oltre, eccoci al cortile interno con il pozzo centrale.

To my right were exposed a catapult and a cart. above us stood the imposing stone and brick tower.

ITA

Alla mia destra erano esposte una catapulta e un carro. sopra di noi svettava l'imponente torre di pietra e mattoni.

Unfortunately the rain did not want to stop!

ITA

Purtroppo la pioggia non voleva smettere!

I left the castle with the promise of returning to visit this beautiful town and so I did !!

Sono uscito dal castello con la promessa di tornare a visitare questa bellissima cittadina e così ho fatto!!

I went back on Christmas afternoon, it was much colder but it wasn't raining!

Ci sono tornato il pomeriggio del giorno di Natale, faceva molto più freddo ma non pioveva!

There were many people in the square and the ice rink was animated by children and families.

ITA

In piazza c'era molta gente e la pista di ghiaccio era animata da bambini e famiglie.

The visibility was excellent so I decided to take some shots of the upper castle and the city walls.

La visibilità era ottima così ho deciso di fare alcuni scatti del castello supeiore e la cinta muraria.

The city wall is 1800 meters long and is interspersed with 23 towers!

La cinta muraria è lunga 1800 metri ed è intervallata da ben 23 torri!

Once the sun went down with surprise the walls were illuminated by Christmas lights, a really nice effect!

Un volta calato il sole con sorpresa la cinta muraria è stata illuminata da luci natalizie, davvero un bell'effetto!

Even the lights under the arcades were on, the square had become a jewel.

ITA

Anche le luci sotto i portici erano accese, la piazza era diventata un gioiello.

Under other arcades some children played chess on a maxi chessboard...

Sotto altri portici alcuni bambini giocavano a scacchi su una maxi scacchiera...

It was time to go, but I wanted to see the effect of the illuminated city walls from outside the city walls.

I found a place to park the car, near a roundabout.

To take a photo that included the whole wall and the castle, I had to take the photo from the center of the road, being careful of the cars that came, but I did it.

It is not a nice photo but it gives the idea! :D

Era ora di andare, ma volevo vedere da fuori le mura della città l'effetto della cinta muraria illuminata.

Ho trovato un posto dove parcheggiare la macchina, nei pressi di una rotonda.

Per fare una foto che comprendesse tutta la cinta e il castello, ho dovuto fare la foto dal centro della strada stando attento alle auto che arrivavano, ma ce l'ho fatta.

Non è una foto bella foto ma rende l'idea! :D

The visit to the town of Marostica is over, I think I'll be back in the summer.
