A Day in Mantova, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 - Discovering Italy with alequandro!

I had never been there, so one Sunday morning I got in the car and after two hours of travel I was in Mantua!

The church was built in the 11th century and is the oldest church in Mantua.

It is a rare example of a circular church and is characterized by an upper gallery which preserves the remains of some frescoes of the XI-XII centuries which represent a rare example of Romanesque-Lombard painting, of a clear Byzantine school.

In 1908 the building was expropriated and demolition was authorized. During the works, the Rotunda "re-emerged" almost entirely: the church was freed from the superstructures and buildings that completely obstructed its view (the San Lorenzo rotunda is not visible in the old photos of the square). After the reconstruction of the dome around 1911, it was re-consecrated and reopened for worship in 1926 and handed over to the Dominican Fraternity which assumed the burden of its restoration, conservation and opening to the public.

Nel corso dei secoli l'edificio subì trasformazioni radicali fino alla sua definitiva sconsacrazione. Il tempio fu chiuso al culto nel 1579 su disposizione del duca Guglielmo Gonzaga.

Sconsacrata, la rotonda decadde abbastanza rapidamente: divenne prima un magazzino e poi, una volta scoperchiata, un cortile circolare ad uso privato sul confine del popoloso quartiere del ghetto ebraico mantovano.

Nel 1908 l'edificio fu espropriato e ne fu autorizzata la demolizione. Durante i lavori la Rotonda "riemerse" quasi integralmente: la chiesa fu liberata dalle sovrastrutture e dagli edifici che ne occludevano completamente la vista (la rotonda di San Lorenzo non è infatti visibile nelle vecchie foto della piazza). Dopo la ricostruzione della cupola attorno al 1911, fu riconsacrata e riaperta al culto nel 1926 e consegnata alla Fraternita Domenicana che si assunse l'onere del suo restauro, della sua conservazione e della sua apertura al pubblico.

The square tower was erected between 1472 and 1473 by architect Luca Fancelli, a Florentine architect in the service of the Marquis of Mantua Ludovico III Gonzaga on the foundations of a pre-existing building dating back to the 13th century.

At the end of 1473 the astronomical clock was placed on the tower, the work of the Mantuan mathematician Bartolomeo Manfredi, also known as Bartolomeo dell'Orologio. The clock indicated the ordinary hours of astrologers and planets.
It also detected the path of the sun through the signs of the Zodiac and the moon phases. For almost a century, until 1560, the clock worked perfectly. In that year, however, the mechanism failed. It was Francesco Filopono, mathematician and astronomer to bring it back to life. From 1700 no longer active, the astronomical mechanism was restarted in 1989 by the blacksmith and watchmaker Alberto Gorla di Cividale Mantovano.

Under the clock was placed the statue of the Immaculate Madonna, dating back to the early 17th century. The marble balcony adorning the building is also from the same period.

In the highest part of the tower there is a medium-sized bell that strikes the hours.

The earthquake of Emilia in 2012 caused injuries to the tower, which remained closed until the restoration was carried out which allowed its reopening and usability. Inside is housed the Museum of Time, which displays the vintage clock mechanisms and from the top you can have a view of the city and the lakes that surround it.

Alla fine del 1473 sulla torre venne collocato l'orologio astronomico, opera del matematico mantovano Bartolomeo Manfredi, noto anche come Bartolomeo dell'Orologio. L'orologio indicava le ore ordinarie, degli astrologi e dei pianeti.
Altresì rilevava il percorso del sole attraverso i segni dello Zodiaco e le fasi lunari. Per quasi un secolo, fino al 1560, l'orologio funzionava perfettamente. In quell'anno, tuttavia, il meccanismo si guastò. Fu Francesco Filopono, matematico e astronomo a riportarlo in vita. Dal 1700 non più attivo, il meccanismo astronomico fu rimesso in moto nel 1989 dal fabbro ed orologiaio Alberto Gorla di Cividale Mantovano.

Sotto l'orologio fu collocata la statua della Madonna Immacolata, risalente agli inizi del XVII secolo. Dello stesso periodo è anche il balcone, in marmo, ad ornamento dell'edificio.

Nella parte più alta della torre è collocata una campana di medie dimensioni che batte le ore.

Il terremoto dell'Emilia del 2012 provocò lesioni alla torre, che rimase chiusa fino all'esecuzione di restauri che ne hanno consentito la riapertura e la fruibilità. All'interno è ospitato il Museo del Tempo, nel quale sono esposti i meccanismi d'epoca dell'orologio e dalla sommità è possibile avere una vista sulla città e sui laghi che la circondano.
