The life with Jesus: Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh. Romans 8:12
The law of Moses with Jesus is no longer valid because the law tells us where sin is, but it does not justify us or free us from it. The law of Moses was made fundamentally because of the hardness of hearts, and to correct the man who lives according to the flesh. This is what the apostle Paul insistently taught us in all his writings.
Accepting the life with Jesus is accepting an invitation to see life in a different way, no longer as the heirs of Adam, who is the old man, but as heirs of the new man in imitation of the Lord: "A new command I give you: Love one another" John 13:34.
In this way the apostle Paul expressed this spiritual teaching in his epistle to the Romans:
"Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live" Romans 8:12-13.
When Paul spoke to us about the carnal man, he was speaking to us about the man who lives according to the desires or pleasures of the body, such as lust and gluttony; and this type of man lives following the apparent goods, such as money, because they serve fundamentally to maintain or increase these pleasures.
On the other hand, the spiritual man is different, he is the man reborn from above, the man who sees the world with the eyes of God and who is guided by the true good of man, the spiritual gift of eternal life, the knowledge of God: "This is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God", John 17:3.
The message of our Lord Jesus is a call to live according to the dictates of the true life, to live the piety (constancy, firmness, devotion), the wisdom, the perseverance, the continuous improvement, to live the perfections and excellencies of God; and to leave behind the slavery of the flesh and its desires.
